In a stunning development after the conclusion of this morning’s training camp practice, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy announced that wide receiver Jordy Nelson is out for the remainder of training camp and the preseason after a procedure was done on his knee.
According to ESPN.com, the procedure was to correct a nerve issue with his knee that flared up during training camp. The ESPN report says that Nelson could have made it through the season with pain and by taking medication, but he opted for the surgery that would correct the problem.
McCarthy said he was “hopeful” Nelson would be ready for the regular season opener against the San Francisco 49ers but that is not certain at this pont. With Randall Cobb leaving today’s practice with what McCarthy called a bicep injury, the Green Bay wide receiver corps is suddenly getting thin. Cobb’s injury does not seem severe, but the loss of Nelson leaves James Jones as the only receiver from the team’s top three to remain healthy.
This is good news for Jarrett Boykin as well as Charles Johnson and Kevin Dorsey to make noise on the practice field. Johnson and Dorsey have missed practice with injuries but with Nelson confirmed out, this may still give them one last shot at making an impression. Don’t rule out Myles White either.
After emerging from the first week of camp relatively healthy, the injury bug struck the Packers hard this week with the news about Nelson as well as the reported ACL tear suffered by left tackle Bryan Bulaga. For a team that was decimated by injuries last season, Green Bay can’t be too thrilled with the injury news coming out of training camp this week.
This will be the second straight year Bulaga has sustained a season-ending injury. Last year he missed the final seven regular-season games and two playoffs because of a broken bone in his hip.
That leaves the Packers with two primary alternatives to replace him at the crucial left tackle position for the 2013 season.
One is moving Marshall Newhouse from right tackle to left tackle – he started at left tackle the last two seasons before the coaching staff flip-flopped him and Bulaga in the offseason.
Or the Packers could play fourth-round draft pick David Bakhtiari at left tackle. Bakhtiari has been one of the surprise standouts in his first week of training camp and had been playing left tackle with the No. 2 offensive line until late last week, when he moved into the competition for the starting job at right tackle. Bakhtiari played left tackle in college at Colorado.
Whichever one (Newhouse or Bakhtiari) doesn’t move to left tackle would be the probable starter at right tackle, though second-year pro Don Barclay could be in the running at right tackle as well.
The Vikings agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Bishop, agent Blake Baratz confirmed Monday on Twitter.
Bishop was released by the Green Bay Packers last Monday and traveled to Minnesota on Tuesday, conducting a workout in front of Minnesota’s decision-makers on Wednesday.
“Good workout and we’ll see. (We’re) doing our due diligence in terms of bringing guys in that are free agents,” defensive coordinator Alan Williams said last week. “The neat thing is that I don’t have to make those decisions. I just have to coach them once they get here.”
A source told Packer Report last week that Vikings general manager Rick Spielman had been “laying in wait” on the Packers’ decision regarding Bishop. According to a source, the Packers began spreading the word back in March that Bishop would be out unless he accepted a pay cut of nearly two-thirds of his $3.464 million base salary. That talk came to a head during the NFL Draft, when Packer Report and other outlets learned that the Packers had put Bishop on the block.
